Routine Treatments

Corns

Hard corns are small concentrated areas of thickened skin and occur in response to pressure or friction. Symptoms are often likened to ‘walking on a stone’ and can be extremely painful. Corns occur over bony areas such as joints and can be problematic in people with toe deformities where rubbing occurs in footwear. Soft corns are soft and rubbery in texture and occur between the toes where the skin is moist.

A number of conservative treatment options are available to alleviate the pain and recurrence of callus and corns and skin complaints. These include painlessly removing the corn or callus, advice on foot creams to improve the condition of the skin and relieving pressure areas with padding, toe protectors or insoles.

Calluses

Callus is an area of thickened skin that occurs when the feet respond to pressure or friction. Symptoms such as a stabbing pain when walking or a stinging, burning sensation may be experienced. This can be initiated by unsuitable footwear, bony areas of the feet or simply your manner of walking. Some people are more prone to developing callus because of their skin type.

Cracked Heels

The skin around the heel can crack or fissure if the skin is very hard or dry. Apart from the appearance, deeper fissuring can be very painful and may even become infected. Reducing the fissuring in clinic and applying intensive foot cream will make your heels feel instantly more comfortable.

Thickened Toe Nail

Toe nails can naturally thicken or harden as we age or it could be due to trauma, pressure from a shoe or fungal infection. Some systemic diseases can also affect the toe nails. Reducing the thickness of the nail in clinic will relieve the pressure and improve the appearance of the nail.

Ingrown Toe Nail

An ingrown toe nail occurs when the sides of the nail grow into the surrounding skin and pierce the flesh. This can be very painful and commonly becomes infected. The treatment involves removing the offending nail spike and footwear and footcare advice to prevent re-occurrence. If you are prone to ingrowing toe nails a more permanent solution may be indicated. By painlessly removing the offending part of the nail under local anaesthetic, a chemical is used to prevent that part of the nail growing back.

"I have had a problem with my big toe nail for years, particularly with pressure from shoes. It often became infected and I regularly took antibiotics to try and clear it up. After having the problem part of the nail removed by Karen I no longer have any pain or have to take antibiotics and the nail looks competely normal".

Olga, Bournemouth

"I regularly see Karen for my toenails to be cut and a corn removed. She is friendly, professional and I feel I am walking on air after seeing her"
